Joking aside: ambassador meets former first minister

Positive engagement was the order of the day when ambassador Ron Prosor and his embassy team visited Belfast  and met with  leaders from the main political parties. Difficult issues arising from the Hamas conflict were not dodged, but Northern Ireland’s politicians of all political parties were prepared to listen to Israel’s case.

One of the outstanding outcomes of the Ambassador’s visit was that the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister accepted an invitation to send a trade delegation to Israel. In these exceptionally difficult times all will welcome the possibility of increased trade, investment and jobs between Israel and Northern Ireland. Israel is one of the leading hi tech economies in the world and has amongst the highest number of scientists and investment in research and development per capita .

We at NIFI were incredibly proud to take a leading part in arranging the ambassador’s visit and to host him at a packed meeting at the Park Avenue hotel. Over 200 people attended to demonstrate to the ambassador that Israel does indeed have friends in NI. The ambassador was interviewed on stage by Belfast Telegraph columnist and broadcaster Lindy McDowell and took questions  from the floor.

The ambassador was also guest of honour at a reception at Castlereagh Borough council, hosted by the mayor, and met academics and business leaders during his two day stay in Northern Ireland.
